PETRONAS HANDS OVER CONTRIBUTION FOR THE SUKMA XI GAMES

Petronas Offshore Oil & Gas Latest NewsPETRONAS today handed over its contribution as the Main Sponsor for the SUKMA XI Games, to be held in Kedah from 24 May to 4 June 2006, to the Menteri Besar of Kedah Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid. The RM1 million sponsorship was handed over by PETRONAS’ Vice President for Gas Business Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim to the Menteri Besar of Kedah Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid in a ceremony at the Dewan Wawasan Jitra.

Under the sponsorship, PETRONAS will contribute in cash and also in kind, in the form of fuel for the official cars, liquefied petroleum gas for the flame burning of the SUKMA XI Cauldron throughout the Games and t-shirts and caps for the Games’ volunteers.

PETRONAS has been the Main Sponsor of SUKMA since 1992 with a contribution of RM1 million for each Games with the exception of the event in Sabah in 2002 where PETRONAS contributed RM2 million in cash and petrol vouchers. PETRONAS’ contribution is a gesture of its commitment towards the development of national sports, and it hopes that participating athletes would take the opportunity to use SUKMA XI as a training platform to further their aspiration to excel in international competitions.

PETRONAS will once again be using the “Smart Pay” card system which will minimise the time taken by the Games’ officials to re-fuel their vehicles. Officials will each be issued with a card with credit limits ranging from RM50 to RM200 per day for a period of 10 days, depending on the type of vehicle assigned to them.

The SUKMA XI is expected to attract about 7,000 participants from 16 States. Other contingents include those from the Royal Malaysian Police and Brunei. The Games will see participants competing in 26 sporting events.

Organised bi-annually, the Games aims to increase the solidarity and friendship among the States, while enhancing the achievement and standard of the athletes.
