The research centre, measuring about 3,100 square feet, is currently housed at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre and has a main molecular laboratory, two tissue culture rooms, a cold room, an equipment room, a computer laboratory, offices and a conference room. This state-of-the-art facility can accommodate up to 20 research scientists.
The main objective of the centre is to study cancer among Malaysian patients and ultimately to prevent or cure the disease. Preliminary data already shows some differences in the spectrum of genetic abnormalities in Asian versus Western cancer patients and these results therefore have important implications for the future, not just for the development of diagnostic markers, but will form the basis of developing new cures.
Furthermore, the Malaysian-based institute could be the launch pad for physicians and scientists to train abroad and in turn, provide opportunities to these Malaysians to return and continue their research locally. This in turn will create and encourage a positive research environment in the country.
PETRONAS’ financial contribution has facilitated the establishment of the basic molecular biology laboratory and tissue culture facilities which have been fully operational since 2 January 2001.
Apart from CARIF, PETRONAS has initiated and facilitated various health awareness projects under its community relations programme. Taking a more holistic approach towards enhancing the well being of Malaysians, PETRONAS has been able to contribute more positively to the community by promoting a healthy lifestyle. Partnering with non-profit organisations, PETRONAS has carried out activities to educate the public on illness and prevention, counseling and seminars to encourage healthy living.
One such initiative is its Mobile Eye Clinic, a collaboration with the Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital, which is equipped with up-to-date ophthalmic equipment for eye care assessment and treatment.
PETRONAS, together with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, has also helped Hospital UKM, Cheras to establish a Burns Centre at the hospital to provide the necessary treatment for burn victims.
Other PETRONAS’ contributions include haemodialysis machines to Polis DiRaja Malaysia to provide medical treatment to the members of the police force and their families.
