Meanwhile, 50 secondary school students received PETRONAS’ minor scholarship awards. These students were chosen from 17 schools in Southern Thailand. They formed the fourth batch of students from this part of Thailand to have received PETRONAS’ scholarship to assist them in their studies.
The scholarships were presented to the students at a ceremony held here by the Governor of Songkhla, His Excellency Mr Aumnuay Rongngern, who was also the guest-of-honour. Representing PETRONAS at the ceremony was Vice-President of Education Mrs Mariam Rahimah Mukhtar.
The award of the scholarship to the students is part of a larger effort by PETRONAS, as a responsible corporate citizen, to make meaningful contributions to members of the community wherever the corporation operates. PETRONAS has been awarding scholarship to students in Southern Thailand since 1999. To date, 129 secondary school students and 21 undergraduates from the Prince of Songkhla University have been awarded PETRONAS’ scholarship worth about 1.8 million baht (about RM180,000).
The minor scholarship awarded to the secondary school children, ranging from those in Form 1 to Form 6, comprises monthly allowances to help ease their expenses. For the university students, apart from the monthly allowances, they would also receive fund from PETRONAS to pay for their tuition fees and books.
The eligibility for the scholarship is based on the student’s excellent academic performance, strong leadership qualities and active involvement in co-curricular activities. The socio-economic background of the respective student’s family is also a major factor in deciding the award of the scholarship.
