OPEC SECRETARY-GENERAL TO ADDRESS ASCOPE’S SEVENTH CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION IN KUALA LUMPUR

The Seventh (7th) Conference & Exhibition, organised by the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE) which will kick off on Monday, November 5, 2001 has attracted participants and exhibitors from all the ASEAN and some 10 Non-ASEAN countries. More than 30 speakers, comprising industry experts, policy shapers and decision makers have also confirmed their participation. Malaysia’s Prime Minister YAB Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad is also expected to grace the event with a special luncheon address on November 7, 2001. OPEC Secretary General H.E Dr. Ali Rodrigues Araque will deliver a key paper titled “Forging a New Order in the Petroleum Industry: The Challenges Ahead” on November 5, 2001.

Themed “Forging Towards a New Order in the Oil and Gas Industry”, the 7th Conference & Exhibition will be held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from November 5 to 8, 2001 and will be hosted by PETRONAS. Sponsors for the event include Accenture, the Boston Consulting Group, Delcom, ExxonMobil, Schlumberger and Shell.

Held every four years on a rotational basis in ASCOPE Member Countries, the Conference has arguably become one of the largest and most important oil and gas conventions to be organised in Asia. This year’s event will seek to highlight and draw insights into the New Order emerging in the global oil and gas industry, in keeping with the structural changes taking place within the industry. It will see a gathering of industry experts, policy shapers and decision makers from all over the world who will impart, discuss and share knowledge, expertise and experience in various aspects of the industry. Participants attending the Conference will get first-hand informed views, opinions and perspectives on several topics and issues facing the industry.

Apart from the industry’s “New Order”, discussions will also touch on energy security and sustainable development as well as opportunities and challenges in the industry’s upstream activities and the value-adding downstream business chain. A subject close to ASCOPE’s heart, the proposed Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline (TAGP) project, will also be deliberated upon. Participants at the Conference will also hear about the latest developments in the oil, gas and energy arena of ASCOPE Member Countries, to be presented by top-level ASCOPE Council members and officials from each ASEAN country.

The 7th Conference & Exhibition will boast a “Trade Fair” concept, integrating trade and business opportunities into the event’s main programme. The ASCOPE Centre for Business Opportunities will be set up at the PWTC to provide a platform for interaction and networking among delegates. At the Centre, delegates will gain first-hand information on policies and procedures for doing business with ASEAN’s National Oil Companies (NOCs) as well as on business opportunities in ASCOPE Member Countries. Participants, like NOCs and service providers, will also have the opportunity to promote their acreages, products and services at the Centre. It is expected that through the Centre, new business contacts will be forged and old alliances renewed, thus strengthening and enhancing relationships within the global oil and gas fraternity.
